Air lock or loss of prime – A surface pump requires its casing and suction pipe completely full of water to generate suction. If air enters, the impeller spins in air and pulls zero water.

Faulty foot valve – The non-return valve at the bottom of the suction line stops water from draining back into the sump. If it's jammed with silt, degraded, or stuck open, prime is lost every single time the motor shuts off.

Air leak in the suction pipe – Even a microscopic pinhole or loose threaded union on the suction line sucks air instead of water under negative pressure.

Low water level in the sump or borewell – If the source level drops below the foot valve strainer, the pump simply draws air. This is especially prevalent in Noida during dry summer spells.

Blocked strainer or suction line – Sludge, polythene, algae, or heavy mineral scale choking the foot valve screen prevents inflow.

Closed or partially closed delivery valve – A jammed gate valve or closed ball valve along the riser pipe physically blocks water from entering the roof tank.

Blocked or scaled delivery pipe – Noida's hard water leaves chalky mineral deposits over years that drastically reduce internal pipe diameter, creating extreme backpressure.

Stuck non-return valve (NRV) in delivery line – If the check valve flap cannot swing open, water has nowhere to go.

Damaged or worn impeller – Sand and silt abrade brass or plastic impellers over time. When the vanes wear down, the motor spins at full RPM but cannot generate sufficient dynamic head.

Worn mechanical seal – A deteriorated ceramic/carbon seal leaks water outside and allows continuous air ingress into the casing.

Low voltage or a degraded capacitor – If the start/run capacitor has dropped in capacitance, the motor operates at sub-optimal speed without enough torque to lift water 30-50 feet.

Wrong direction of rotation (3-Phase Motors) – Inverted phase wiring causes reverse rotation; the pump hums and spins but cannot pump upward.

Inadequate pump head rating – If a building was renovated or extended higher, an underpowered 0.5 HP motor may simply fail to reach the new tank height.

Dropped water table below pump intake

Ruptured riser column pipe (water circulates back down the bore)

Jammed non-return valve or silted impellers

Burned cable joint or faulty starter control box capacitor

The pump has been primed repeatedly but still fails to push water

The motor hums or vibrates heavily without spinning freely

You notice smoke, burning electrical smells, or the MCB trips immediately

Water is leaking from the mechanical seal between the motor and pump head

You need borewell or submersible pump inspection

Low voltage or capacitor replacement is needed

Clean your foot valve and suction strainer twice a year

Never operate the motor without water inside the casing

Install an automatic water level controller with dry-run protection

Schedule annual motor servicing and bearing lubrication
